Abstract

POWER UP! GIVING UNDERGRADUATES THE TOOLS TO MAKE IT IN THE OCEAN SCIENCE WORKFORCE

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) operates various ocean observatories and connects with existing global technology to engage a range of audiences with real-time ocean data coming from the deep sea. Undergraduates are of particular interest to ONC as fostering the next generation of ocean scientists, through recruitment, training and retention, is an important goal of ours. This presentation will focus on Power Up! a one day marine networking and training event for post-secondary students. During Power Up! students took part in engaging workshops, were inspired by a visionary keynote and then participated in an exciting “speed dating” session where they met with representatives that span industry from non-profit, to education, to government, to consulting. Power Up! addressed the real life concerns of undergraduates and gave them the tools and confidence to stay within the field of marine science. Power Up! proved to be a very successful event based on evaluation metrics, and could not have happened without partnering with Mitacs Inc. We wish to share this experience and hope that it can be used as a template for similar events.
