A NEW IN SITU INSTRUMENT FOR THE SIMULTANEOUS COLLECTION OF VOLTAMMETRIC AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC DATA IN MARINE ENVIRONMENTS

A new patent-pending in situ instrument was developed to collect voltammetric data and chromatographic data simultaneously from any marine environment. This analyzer was developed for analysis of cations and anions in the water column and in sediments. This new system allows for the simultaneous detection of relevant biogeochemical species using voltammetry and anions such as Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, and NO2- using isocratic anion exchange chromatography. This instrument can analyze samples directly with voltammetric electrodes and can simultaneously inject a sample directly into a specially designed inlet system for use in high pressure liquid chromatograph. The instrument also has the ability to control a micromanipulator, which can profile sediment and collect small filtered porewater volumes from a specially designed sampling system. The voltammetric and chromatographic system as well as representative voltammetric and chromatographic data will be presented.
