SCI-051: Partnering Scientists and Educators to Increase Coastal and Estuarine Knowledge.

Conveners: Eric Koepfler (eric@coastal.edu), Laura Murray (murray@hpl.umces.edu) and Jan Hodder (jhodder@uoregon.edu)

The partnering of research scientists with informal and formal educators can be an effective mechanism to enhance science literacy in a broad range of populations. This session will focus on the models of interaction and processes involved in scientist and educator collaborations in coastal and estuarine science. We encourage scientist-educator partnerships to submit abstracts that give examples of their work together, the outcomes they have achieved, and the challenges they faced that will maximize learning for a primarily researcher audience. Session participants should describe the following where appropriate: 1) characteristics of the partnership 2) any products developed by the partnership 3) the time involvement for the researcher and the educator 4) end user impact(s) 5) strategy used to assess outcomes 6) sustainability and transferability of the partnership, and 7) funding sources. The value of these sorts of collaborations will be described from the prespective of all parties including the funding agencies in an end of session panel discussion.
