The Bizarre and the Beautiful –Ernst Haeckel, his Art, and the HMS Challenger Expedition

The intricate illustrations of the renowned 19th-century biologist and illustrator Ernst Haeckel, one of the world’s most celebrated naturalists and artists, will be featured in an art exhibition in the lobby of the Honolulu Convention Center during the 2017 ASLO Meeting.  Featured will be startlingly beautiful images of Siphonophores, Medusae, and Radiolaria created by Haeckel for the report of the HMS Challenger expedition, which circumnavigated the world from 1872-76, discovering and cataloging nearly 5,000 new species from the depths of Earth's oceans. The images that will be showcased were selected from the spectacular collection published in Art Forms from the Abyss: Ernst Haeckel's Images From The HMS Challenger Expedition, a volume of Haeckel’s work curated by Drs. Peter J. LeB. Williams and Dylan W. Evans, who also will curate the ASLO exhibit.
