Abstract

CAPACITY BUILDING IN ENVIRONMENTAL BIOINFORMATICS AND MARINE BIOTECHNOLOGY

The presentation will cover the development and implementation of a training pipeline for marine ecologists to enlarge their capacities in using bioinformatics concepts and tools as well as getting state-of-the-art knowledge on (i) the legal base of accessing marine genetic resources and (ii) using genomics for biotechnological applications. A training and information needs analysis, the resulting training concepts and outcomes of four training courses, including one multi-disciplinary summer school will be illustrated, all done under the European-funded Micro B3 project (FP7). To underline the translational character of microbial oceanographic research, ideas for hand-over of training concepts to research infrastructures and other permanent organisations will be proposed. Finally outreach activities like industry expert and stakeholder workshops, aimed at diverse stakeholders, some of them ongoing, will be presented and participation encouraged, to enhance multi-disciplinary and cross-sectorial thinking.
