007 Biological connectivity and its importance within the context of global change

Despite the fundamental role played by dispersal and population connectivity in determining the resilience of populations, there is still a limited knowledge about the dispersal strategies of many marine species due to the difficulty of tracking the trajectory and fate of propagules. This session aims to address biological connectivity from gene to community level in different species groups and environments (ocean, coast, estuaries, rivers, and lakes), in order to generate debate and fruitful comparisons across disciplines, as well as to infer species and ecosystem vulnerability in the face of global change. Main topics are: 1) Measuring movements of aquatic populations, 2) Gene flow among populations in heterogeneous landscapes and seascapes, 3) Population migration rates at community level and the neutral theory of biodiversity, 4) Mechanisms of species dispersal, 5) Habitat suitability shifts under climate change scenarios, and 6) Species potential for acclimation and colonization new areas.
